Your mouth – Give it a rest already!

Is your body telling you it’s time to Detox? Then you probably should. Listen to your body! The definition of detox is to “abstain from or rid the body of toxic or unhealthy substances” thereby cleansing impurities in the blood. Over time our daily eating habits and lifestyle tend to lead to a build-up of harmful deposits in the system. Impurities can build up in the internal organs, blood or the skin layers.

Fortunately, we do not live in the age where bloodletting is a prescribed method, but fasting which has also been practised for ages remain a great practice in the detoxifying of the system. However, this should be practiced with care and not turn into a hunger strike. Also popular, is the consumption of certain food and drink to rid impurities from the system.

Tell-tale signs that could let you know it is time for a cleanse would be:

  • Feeling sluggish
  • Experiencing aches and pains
  • Lack of energy
  • Skin outbreaks
  • The Digestive system playing up
  • Weight gain that you can’t shake
  • Being unable to bounce back as quickly after an illness such as the common flue

The organs that rid the body of harmful chemicals like the liver and kidneys, may have been compromised due to our eating habits (processed food, sugars, alcohol…) and lifestyle (stress, partying, smoking…) and may need a period of rest, which is where fasting plays a big role.

You could set aside 2days per month of consuming water only which will assist these organs in a “rest and recuperate” period to function optimal thereafter. Alternatively, one day every 2 weeks should also help your body to get rid of impurities or toxins. And yes, starting is not easy, your tummy might think your throat has been slit, but it is so worth it in the end, so tell that tummy to buckle up and fight the good fight! When you hear that rumble in the jungle … drink loads of water into fooling that little sneaky complainer.

You may also experience a lack of energy because you are depriving the body of fuel for a short period, and what better way to adhere to that too, by resting. So choose a day or days when you can have a breather.

Although there are various schools of thought on the subject, I would from personal experience advise on abstaining plus eating healthy and exercising regularly as the best way to rid the body from harmful toxin build-up.

The aim of detox is to:

  • Rest the organs trough fasting
  • Promote elimination through the intestines, kidneys and skin
  • Stimulate the liver as the prime detox organ
  • Re-stock and refuel the body with healthy nutrients
  • Improve blood flow through exercise

When you start your detoxification process think bigger than to give your organs a rest, by trying to cut down or eliminating using harmful chemicals on and around your environment, such as your anti-perspirant, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, cleaning products etc. For all of these shelf bought products you will find a natural product that will do the job as well and which is safer to you, your family and the environment.

Please note that you should ask your local physician if you suffer from any chronic diseases about which may be the best method of detoxification for you, if at all.

We shall discuss food and other helpful methods of detoxifying with the next blog. For this week “Giving it a rest” is a great way to start! Just Zip it!
