5 Steps to Happiness

We all know about the big moments in life that bring happiness i.e. Your first kiss, passing the exam, winning the race, walking down the aisle, holding your baby in your arms for the first time… These moments of happiness are like big waves crashing on the rocks, but once the euphoria wears off and you have to change those diapers, you still need the small moments to keep you going. Today we celebrate “This all belong to us” day and All of This… is what leads to happiness.

Step 1: Enjoy the small stuff. Positive emotions in small amounts make you a happier person. Live in the moment. Look around you on your way to work. See the beautiful flower pushing its way through the concrete gap to bloom where nobody has prepared a garden for it. Not into flowers? Appreciate the curves of the concrete jungle. Someone with great ability drew that elegance on paper before it became part of your city-scape. Look at all the colour around you, from the skies above to that pop of colour amidst the grey. Reflective moments of joy will also bring you happiness. Instead of thinking about a sad or negative experience, recall a joyous moment in your life. You may even find yourself laughing out loud at such a memory and what is more infectious than a smile or a laugh? You may even cheer up the grumpy cat.

Step2: Live in gratitude. Be thankful for what you have. Put the question of “What am I grateful for today?” to yourself every day. Examples of this is to be grateful for your health, a bed to sleep in, food to eat, clothes to wear, friends, family, a job etc. Yep, we really do have so much to be grateful for, it’s enough to make you happy and humble!

Step 3: Give more. Now that you are happy and humbled, think about others, that are going without, humans and animals alike. Get involved in charity. You do not have to necessarily spend money, but you may want to share your lunch with the homeless person. Give of yourself, give up some of your time in service to others. You may want to help out at the soup kitchen, the animal shelter, the old age home or the orphanage. This is one of the most gratifying things you as a human being can do. The pleasure of giving far outweighs the joy of receiving and it leads to immense inner happiness.

Step 4: Enjoy what you do. If you are happy in your work environment your days will be fulfilled. If not, consider changing direction until you do what gives you drive and fill your day with happiness. Money is not always the driver, your contentment is and as the well-known saying goes… If you do what you like, you won’t be working a day in your life!

Step 5: Hang with the right crowd! Surround yourself with like-minded peeps. Studies done by the University of California and Harvard Medical School revealed that “happiness can spread from person to person to person in a chain reaction, through social circles”. On average, every happy friend you have increases your chance of being happy by nine percent. Now if happiness is contagious, don’t you want to put yourself in a position to catch it?
